Why do car manufacturers only use tin rims as spare tires?
The role of rims in a car is very important. Not only does it support overall vehicle performance, but it also has an impact on appearance. Classy car manufacturers certainly use attractive and quality rims to provide the best products for customers. However, for car spare tires, they usually only use tin rims. Why? Here's the explanation!
Cost efficiency is the main reason
The main reason why car manufacturers only use tin rims as spare tires is for cost efficiency. Original factory rims require quite high manufacturing costs. Therefore, many manufacturers choose to use tin rims in order to save production costs.
In addition to being cheaper in terms of cost, tin rims on spare tires are also usually not used for a long time, so they are considered not a problem for daily driving activities. However, in fact, many Indonesians still use tin rims and do not immediately replace them with original rims. Of course, this is not recommended because original rims are still the best for driving safety.
Can rims are rarely used on car main tires
Commonly used by new cars until the 1990s, tin rims are now rarely used on car main tires. Nowadays, most car manufacturers prioritize racing rims. The use of racing rims for the latest cars makes the use of tin rims on main tires limited. Even so, up to now tin rims are still widely used on car spare tires.
Characteristics of tin rims
Racing rims made from several compositions of materials such as aluminum, copper and titanium have a lighter weight compared to tin rims. Canned rims are heavier than racing rims, in accordance with their use which is generally intended for transport cars such as pick-up cars.
Canned rims have strength characteristics that are usually relied upon to carry quite heavy loads. It is also usually quite strong when hitting bumps or passing through potholes. Even though they can be said to be quite strong, canned rims have limited models so their appearance is not as attractive as other types of rims. Canned rims also have qualities below the main tire which makes them only used as spare tires by many manufacturers.
Remember, the spare tire for the tin rim is temporary
Having lower quality standards than original factory-made rims, spare tires for tin rims are ideally temporary. It is not used every day and is only used in emergency situations. The spare wheel rim tire must be immediately replaced with a genuine wheel tire and not a can.
You can replace the spare tire with a new car tire from Dunlop which offers a good level of quietness so that it increases comfort when driving. Dunlop car tires also have a number of technologies that ensure driving safety. One of them is Dunlop Self Supporting Technology (DSST), a run flat tire technology that allows users to drive safely for a certain distance, even when the tires have no air.
It's even more interesting because Dunlop car tires also have grip that adapts to road conditions in the country. The SP Touring R1, for example, is one product that you can choose because it has wider grooves and shoulder ribs so that you can drive stably even on wet roads. Dunlop SP Touring R1 is also supported by Jointless Full Nylon Band technology so that when used in various driving conditions, the steel belt remains in position.
Now, Drivemate knows why car manufacturers only use tin rims as spare tires. If you are forced to use a spare car tire with tin rims, immediately replace it with the main tire from Dunlop as soon as the situation allows. However, the main tire is able to provide better performance than the spare tire on the tin rim.
