Keep your car safe from malicious hands with an immobilizer
Today, a car security system is mandatory. One thing you can choose is an immobilizer which is quite effective in protecting the vehicle from naughty hands.
Car safety should always be a concern. Especially during a pandemic that is hitting the economy like now. Data on the increase in the number of motor vehicle thefts released by the police could be a warning.
On June 19 2020, the Metro Jaya Regional Police Chief stated that vehicle theft cases increased by six percent. A similar phenomenon also occurred in Papua. Suara Merdeka said there was an increase in theft cases by 72.5 percent from the first semester of 2019 to the first semester of 2020.
This requires the owner to provide extra security for his vehicle. They can use an immobilizer in their car as a solution.
What is an Immobilizer?
Immobilizer is a security system that can prevent the engine from starting when the car is started with the wrong key. The car will still turn off even if it is turned on with another similar key.
This is considered effective in providing extra security. The reason is, the key for a car equipped with an immobilizer must really match. Otherwise, the car will not start.
Immobilizer Working System
The immobilizer bases its operation on sending wave signals through a component called a transmitter. Each transmitter has a special code that is tailored to the car. The new car will be able to start when there is a suitable wave.
To understand how it works further, you need to know the components in the immobilizer. There are three main components that work there, namely:
â— Transmitter
A component whose function is to send radio waves with a certain frequency to the Control Module.
â— Transponder
This is the component that receives the waves sent to the Control Module. In addition, the transponder also identifies the signal obtained.
â— Control Module
A useful component for managing received radio waves based on identification from the transponder. From here the command to activate or deactivate the ignition system and fuel pump relay is executed.
Armed with these three components, the immobilizer can work. The working process begins when the car is started by pressing the start button or inserting the ignition key. At that time, the transmitter will send waves to the Control Module.
Once received, the transponder in the Control Module immediately works to identify the wave signal received. If it is deemed to match the code installed in the car, the transponder will send data to the Control Module to activate the ignition system circuit and turn on the fuel pump relay. Instantly the car will start immediately.
However, when the transponder finds a code mismatch, the transponder will not send a signal to activate the ignition system and fuel pump relay. The Electronic Control Unit immediately blocks the flow of current to it so that the car will not start.
Effective for car security
The immobilizer working system supports car security. The key used must be completely appropriate. This means that if someone else uses a different key, the car still won't start.
Each car that uses an immobilizer is given a specific code. Here's the secret. Even if another key is used exactly the same, starting from the shape, brand or size, it still won't work on that car. Because, the code is definitely not appropriate.
This will make it difficult for naughty hands who want to start the car with a fake key. Not surprisingly, this system is now starting to be installed in various types of the latest cars.
Even so, there is a price to pay. Often immobilizers are only installed in mid to high level cars. It's not surprising that its sophistication requires higher costs to manufacture.
An immobilizer is worth installing to increase car security. However, be prepared if it breaks. The entire immobilizer circuit must be replaced with a new one. Likewise if the key is damaged or broken. Complete replacement is mandatory.
However, the immobilizer is quite durable. The damage that may occur is quite minimal. Therefore, this system is still worth choosing to secure the car.
