The Sophistication of EBD that Makes Braking Even More Powerful

Car safety support devices are now increasing. One of them is Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD). Its presence is able to make braking more effective.

EBD is one of the braking system technologies that is often used in modern vehicles. Usually EBD is a package with Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). 

However, EBD and ABS are not a single system. It's possible that a car uses ABS without being equipped with EBD or vice versa.

Even so, the existence of EBD can actually complement the role of ABS. If ABS is useful in preventing the car from skidding as a result of the brakes locking, EBD is useful as a brake pressure controller. Later EBS can work together with ABS to make braking even more optimal.

How Does EBD Work?

As explained previously, EBD is a system that is useful for controlling braking pressure. This technology works by regulating the distribution of brake pressure on each wheel according to its needs.

For optimal braking, a car actually requires different brake pressure on each wheel. This is because the grip of the tires on each side is not the same. Factors such as road conditions, maneuvers taken, and the weight of the car have an influence.

For this reason, an intelligent pressure regulation system is needed for optimal braking. Here EBD shows its role. This system is able to control the pressure applied according to the needs of each wheel.

In carrying out its functions, EBD uses the same components as ABS. EBD requires an Electronic Control Unit (ECU), speed sensors on each wheel, and a brake force modulator.

EBD operations start from detecting possible slippage produced by the speed sensors on the wheels. When the sensor assesses that there is a potential for something to happen, a signal will immediately be sent to the ECU.

The ECU then processes it to determine the amount of brake pressure. If it has been determined, the ECU will immediately assign the brake force modulator to distribute brake pressure according to the needs of each wheel.

This will prevent the car from skidding. Not surprisingly, EBD is very useful when driving on winding roads or on road surface conditions where the tire grip is not the same.

What are the other benefits of EBD?

Aside from ensuring the car doesn't slip, EBD is very useful for keeping the brake system more optimal. Thanks to EBD, the braking distance will be shorter than on cars that don't have it.

For example, when there is a car full of passengers. When you brake suddenly, the weight of the car immediately shifts to the front. However, thanks to EBD, the front wheels get better braking pressure so the car stops more easily.

Without EBD, braking pressure will be distributed evenly. This makes it more difficult for the car to stop properly because the load borne by the front and rear wheels is actually different. If you make a mistake, the car can skid and be difficult to control.

However, this can be avoided by using EBD. Braking pressure distribution will be proportional according to needs. As a result, the tire's traction remains optimal. 

Thanks to that, the car remains easy to control when braking. In this way, the potential for accidents will be minimized.

The benefits of EBD are not so pronounced in cars that are not heavily loaded. However, its usefulness is clear when the load carried by the car is large. Braking is guaranteed to be easier.

Because its benefits are quite vital, many modern cars are equipped with EBD. If combined with ABS, its presence will support a better braking system.
