Advantages of Directional Tires Worth Considering
Car tire designs are quite diverse. Each type has advantages and disadvantages that can be adjusted to suit your needs. One of them is directional tires which are known to be suitable for high-performance vehicles.
The term directional tire refers to the design of the tire tread pattern which is specifically designed in one direction. This type of tire can only be installed in the right direction. Otherwise, tire performance will decrease drastically. Likewise with its durability.
Therefore, before installing directional tires, the correct direction needs to be known. As a guide, there is usually an indicator in the form of an arrow on the side of the tire to show the installation direction.
How to Identify Directional Tires?
However, knowing whether a tire is directional or not is very important. To identify it, the tire tread pattern design can be a reference.
Try to see the tire inflation. Directional tires usually have a pattern like an arrow pointing in one direction. Often there are tire grooves that form the letter V or Y.
The tire pattern is clearly visible when the tire is viewed from above. There is a groove that runs from the edge of the tire to the middle of the two sides. The pattern tapers smaller inward until it forms a pointed tip. Often the shape resembles the letter V or Y.
What are the advantages of Directional Tires?
Directional tires are worth considering by those using high-performance vehicles. This type of tire is believed to be very supportive of speed and excellent control.
The design of the directional tire tread pattern is the reason. With a V or Y-shaped groove in the middle, the tire's surface contact with the road remains large. This makes the tire control when turning or maneuvering better than other tires. In this way, vehicle control will feel easier.
Not only that, the unidirectional design of directional tires also makes all maneuvers easier to do at high speeds. The tires will continue to have traction so control will be maintained.
This capability will remain the same on wet roads. Even if the road surface is slippery due to water, directional tires can always be relied on.
The V or Y-shaped tread pattern design is again key. The tire grooves there allow the tires to drain water optimally. This way, the tires can still tread the road well.
Thanks to these advantages, it is not surprising that directional tires are often used for sports cars. Vehicles that require optimal control support are very suitable to use this type of tire.
Can Non-Sports Cars Use It?
Even though they are recommended for sports cars, directional tires can still be used by non-sports cars. However, there are many considerations before doing so.
The price of directional tires tends to be more expensive than other types of tires such as asymmetric tires and symmetric tires. Apart from that, tires are also more difficult to maintain because of the unique rotation system.
Unlike symmetrical and asymmetrical tires which can be rotated easily, directional tire rotation requires special attention.
Tires can actually be rotated by changing the front tire to the rear or vice versa on the same side of the car. However, if a size imbalance is found or there is even the slightest defect in the rotated tire, the tire's performance can be affected. It is recommended to immediately replace them with new tires.
This is what makes directional tires less durable. Tires must be replaced as soon as they find a “difference” between the tires to be rotated. However, if they are not rotated, the tires will definitely not last long, which presents a difficult choice.
The characteristics of directional tires are unique compared to symmetrical and asymmetrical tires. Not surprisingly, this type of tire is rarely used for passenger vehicles. Even so, it all comes down to each person's tastes and needs. Would you like to use it?
