Difference between Monocoque and Ladder Frame Chassis in Cars
Likened to the skeletal framework of an organism, the chassis has an important role in a car. Its existence is the basis for car production. There are two types of car chassis, namely monocoque and ladder frame. The differences need to be understood in order to be able to determine the choice of car that suits your needs.
Chassis design is known to have a special impact. The chassis can function as vehicle safety, increase driver comfort, and help direct the vehicle's speed.
This means that differences in chassis type can affect the car's performance. Therefore, understanding the ins and outs of the chassis applied to a vehicle is very important.
MONOCOQUE CHASSIS
Comes from French, monocoque chassis refers to a single frame. This means that both the frame and body of the vehicle become one unit.
In this design, the entire frame is a rigid structure. This is intentional because everything is used to support the load being supported.
Compared to a ladder frame, the presence of a monocoque chassis is newer. However, now there are more users. Sedan and hatchback cars are considered the most suitable for use. However, SUVs can also use a monocoque.
The ease of designing a car with a monocoque chassis is an advantage. Modular in nature, all chassis can be applied to a variety of different car types with ease.
Advantages of Monocoque Chassis
â— Lightweight so it saves fuel
The main advantage of the monocoque chassis lies in its light weight. This is because the metal frame extends to the farthest part of the car.
This design makes it unnecessary to use an additional load-bearing frame for various car components. This is what automatically reduces the weight of the vehicle.
When a car is light in weight, a large powerful engine is no longer needed. Fuel savings start from here because the car only requires a small capacity engine.
â— Easy to Control Car
The monocoque chassis gives the car a low center of gravity. This can be seen from the ground clearance which tends to be shorter. This allows the car to be more agile and have better aerodynamics. As a result, control and maneuvering will be easier.
â— Improve Passenger Safety
The monocoque chassis has a great ability to protect car passengers from impact when a collision occurs. This is possible because the outer part of the body is able to become a strong framework that protects the cabin space.
This design ensures that impact energy is absorbed by the body and not transmitted to the cabin. Apart from that, there is usually a crumple zone which further reduces the impact of the collision.
LADDER FRAME CHASSIS
The ladder frame chassis is a type of chassis that was first applied to cars. Its use has been recorded since the early 19th century. At that time, the chassis material still came from wood. However, now steel is the choice.
Unlike a monocoque chassis, the frame and body in a ladder frame chassis are separated. The construction is similar to a ladder consisting of two main transverse rods connected by several reinforcing rods.
First there is a longitudinal rod which is the main support. This is the area that supports the carrying weight and longitudinal energy. Then there are lateral support rods which are useful for providing resistance to lateral forces and rigidity.
Advantages of Ladder Frame Chassis
â— Tough for off-road terrain
The design of the body on a frame in a ladder frame chassis gives the car extra toughness when passing off-road terrain. The car remains in various conditions and is not shaken.
This cannot be separated from the ground clearance which tends to be high. This makes it easier for the car to pass through rocky, uneven and bumpy roads. It's not surprising that many SUVs use a ladder frame chassis.
â— Easy to Repair
The ladder frame chassis that separates the frame and body tends to make repairs easier. In addition, many components in this design are partitioned separately. This makes it easier to divide the area when damage occurs.
â— Strong to Withstand Loads
The ladder frame chassis has the toughness to withstand loads. It takes a lot of pressure to bend or break the structure. In fact, this chassis is able to withstand the pressure that arises from the car's strong torque.
Therefore, ladder frame chassis are often also used in heavy load-carrying vehicles such as trucks. Its toughness is reliable.
Monocoque and ladder frame chassis have different characters and advantages. Which do you prefer? Please determine according to taste.
