Seat Belt Pretensioner System Supports Safety
Seat belts must be in a car. Even though they look the same, the way seat belts work is different. One that is widely used is the seat belt pretensioner system which is able to support safety well.
Seat belts are vital safety support devices because they are attached directly to the body. Its crucial importance is even higher than other devices such as airbags.
It's so important that seat belt innovation is always presented. Now we can enjoy the pretensioner seat belt system which is widely used in various types of cars.
The way the seat belt pretensioner works relies on a sensor connected to a gas or certain chemical mixture. The system is similar to the sensors used by airbags. In fact, the seat belt sensor is closely related to the airbag.
In the pretensioner system, the seat belt will start working when the airbag inflates. Utilizing gas or a chemical mixture that can react when there is a hard impact, the seat belt is able to run automatically.
When a hard impact occurs, the lighter will cause a chemical reaction.
At that time, the seat belt will automatically tighten to prevent the passenger from being thrown from the seat. Then, a few seconds later, the seat belt will loosen by itself.
This system is considered very effective in keeping the body restrained in the car seat. Passengers will not bounce forward. In this way, the risk of fatal accidents due to collisions can be minimized.
Even though it is closely related to the airbag, the seat belt pretensioner can work without the airbag inflating. However, this is only possible when there is a collision in a car traveling at low speed. If that happens, the airbag does not deploy but the seat belt still tightens by itself.
COMBINES WITH OTHER MECHANISMS
Because of its effectiveness, many cars use seat belt pretensioner systems. Not a few end up combining it with other mechanisms such as force-limiters, so that protection is maximized.
In the force-limiter mechanism there is a system that limits the strength of the belt in controlling the passenger's body weight. This technology is needed to minimize impact to the vital chest.
The force-limiter system starts to activate after the pretensioner mechanism works. Through this mechanism, the seat belt can loosen. As a result, the seat belt is able to prevent the body from hitting hard against the inflated airbag. Apart from that, this system is also able to minimize the risk of shoulder fractures due to too strong seat belt pressure.
When combined with a pretensioner mechanism, the force limiter will work in harmony with the airbag. Both systems will be active when the airbag inflates so that the impact is not too hard.
However, even though it is considered effective for protecting passengers, the seat belt pretensioner system is a single-use mechanism. When a collision occurs and the airbag deploys, the system that is already working cannot be used anymore.
So, it is highly recommended to check after a collision occurs. It is important to determine whether the system needs to be updated or not.
Seat belt pretensioners are different from ordinary seat belts in that they can be used repeatedly. However, a regular seat belt will not be able to adjust the belt tension during a collision. This makes the risk of a fatal accident greater than using a seat belt pretensioner.
Interested in using a seat belt pretensioner? Just use it because passenger safety is guaranteed.
